Burn Rehabilitation

TIRR Memorial Hermann and the Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Network share a single goal in treating patients with burns: helping them recover to their fullest functional potential and facilitating the transition back to home and community. Our programs are focused on caring for the whole person, addressing the physical, social and psychological impacts that come with traumatic injuries such as burns.

What Are the Sources of Burn Injuries?

There are different types and causes of burn injuries, including:

• Thermal burns - result from exposure to fire, hot liquids, steam, explosions and contact with hot materials, such as hot metal, glass or other objects
• Chemical burns - also known as caustic burns, occur when skin or eyes come in contact with an irritant, such as strongly acidic or alkali substances; may also affect internal organs, if swallowed
• Electrical burns - result from electricity (from sources such as contact with household current, stun guns or lightning) passing through the body. May cause damage to internal tissues, usually in an arm or leg
• Radiological burns - caused by radiation from X-rays or radiation to treat cancer

Burns can be minor or life-threatening, and treatment varies depending on the severity of the injury. People with severe burns often require treatment at specialized burn centers, including skin grafts to help deep wounds heal. Patients with severe burns may require months of follow-up care, including emotional support and physical therapy.

Our inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs maximize patient outcomes by providing:

• An integrated, collaborative approach by our interdisciplinary team
• Individual and group therapy sessions
• Community reintegration (return to work or school and independence)
• Support groups, counseling, education classes and individualized training for patients, families and caregivers
• Facilities and equipment tailored to meet the needs of individuals with burns
• Discharge planning, which can consist of outpatient rehabilitation, outpatient community wellness programs or support care

• Physical therapist
• Occupational therapist
• Speech language pathologist
• Neuropsychologist
• Clinical social worker
• Vocational counselor
• Wheelchair seating and positioning specialist
• Chaplain

Additional team members of an inpatient stay may include:

• Affiliated rehabilitation physician
• Rehabilitation nursing
• Therapeutic recreation therapist
• Music therapist
• Clinical pharmacist
• Case Manager
• Nutritionist
